This topic has been touched upon in other threads, but I thought it deserved more attention. At least I am curious as to others experiences and observations.

The gym is a great place to meet someone.

If I only had a nickel for everytime I have heard that line. But is it true?

In the three years I have been going to the gym, I have spent many hours observing my fellow gym mates. I can only recall two incidents in all that time in which it appeared a guy just went up and started talking with some chick. They talked for five or ten minutes and then went their own way. (did anything come of it? I don't know) On a sidenote, I also once saw and heard two guys exchange loud and unpleasant comments over some simple mis-understanding (and no, it wasn't a gay hitting on a straight).

What do you guys think? Have you ever met someone at they gym? Have you ever observed a guy or possibley a chick strike up a conversation with a stranger?

Wherever there are women is a great place to meet someone.
The key to remember is it's like Chris Rock said, when a man talks to a woman it's like he's saying "Want some Dick?" so what you need to do is talk to the woman for 10 minutes without actually saying verbally or Non Verbally "Want some Dick"

A good friend of mine likes Yoga Classes but if you are going to meet women at a yoga class, show up early and run your game before class, because after class everyone is sweaty and want to get out of there instead socializing.
Sign up for a 5 class session this way you can find someone you are attracted, then chat with them without saying "want some Dick?" then over the next couple classes it gives you a chance to get her number or email and then it's on from there.

I never make approaches at the gym, I'm there for me time, but based on what I've observed the exercise bikes would be the best, it's quieter, you are in close proximity that you can have a regular convo. Either that or most gyms have a juice bar where you can sit and enjoy a juice or power drink after, at that point its no different that meeting a woman in a coffee shop. plus you automatically have a conversation starter.
"Are you on a cardio day? Weight day? etc."
The Ipod is a pain in the ass for meeting women, while I love mine, you feel like you are really interrupting someone if you want to talk to them, they need to stop the Ipod, take of the headphones and that puts a lot of pressure on the next words out of your mouth.

Oh and one last point, you've got 3 seconds from the point you make eye contact to when you have to start chatting with her otherwise you look like the creepy guy whose been staring at her for 10 minutes. Whether it's true or not you don't want to look like that guy.

Good luck with your search

The one thing that meeting women at the gym has in its favour is that you have already established at least one thing in common, i.e you both go to the gym. The fact that you are trying to look after yourself and your body also paints a positive picture. It can be tough to break the ice but its importnat to keep it light and low key. like you might do in most settings.

Just dont fall into the trap of the pathetic gymrat who struts around all day, more interested in looking at themself in the mirror than working out, asking any and every woman if they want to be spotted, or using the machine immediately after a woman ( their pray ) has and putting plate after plate of weight on trying to impress her. I often get a great laugh watching these clowns stalk any and all women working out while im running on the treadmill.

And people wonder why " women only " gyms have become so popular.

Good post. I remember reading this, but apparently I forgot to respond.

Yoga, pilates, and other sorted classes are probably the best place to strike up a conversation. You are in close proximity and like you mentioned, there are opportunities to talk. But I am only guessing since I have never actually tried any of those classes.

The juice bar is also a good spot. Unfortunately, the only one I know of is at a gym I rarely go to.

The Ipod is a killer. It's a clear impediment to starting a conversation. It's almost like wearing a sign that says "don't talk to me." One almost needs clear signs of interest (or a note) from the woman before attempting to breach the Ipod moat.

"Don't poo where you sleep." Or however that saying goes. If you are someone that likes to go to the gym, how comfortable will you be getting shot down and then seeing that woman day after day? Not a good situation for all parties concerned. If one lives in a large city, this isn't much of a problem as there are likely dozens of gyms.

Ha ha. Yeah it is amusing watching some of these guys who pour it on as soon a pretty woman enters the scene. The plates get slammed more and the grunting suddenly becomes rather noticeable.

:lolBIG: so true

Anyone who knows what they are doing will never touch plates. Even on free weight bench press, the dumb bells shouldnt touch.

As far as the GYM being a GREAT place to hook up with the opposite sex. Yes and no. It's a chance to meet girls as KingBill points out. I wouldnt say it was 'great'.

walkin outside is the best.especially if you go to the same place about every day. ps..during the week, you'd be surprised at how many ladies are out walkin and joggin,(lot of'em with strollers)while the old man is at work. in my experience.women who are in good shape, want to talk about health and fitness.women who arent in shape, want to bitch about their kids,husband,boyfriend,family,etc..annnd,women love to blame bein fat on havin a baby..as far as the ipod.if women want to talk, they take it off.i never interrupt.'keep the continue'

There's usually about a 20-1 ration of men to women so most of the women have the look of "god I hope I can just get through a workout without one of these lugs approaching me". I wouldn't approach a woman in a gym unless they gave me a sign that they wanted me to do so. But like someone else mentioned, I'm not there to chase tail, I'm there to get my workout in as efficiently as possible

Get a dog.

Take it to a popular dog park and it's the easiest conversation starter in the world. What breed is yours? How old? Off to the races.
